Project Scope of Work

  • Each of the 11 Regional Arts Leads in California supported the attendance of and mentoring of at least one team of teachers from his/her respective region.
  • Deb Brzoska, in collaboration with the Regional Leads and CCSESA Arts Initiative leadership, designed and presented regional area seminars to prepare teacher teams to develop a standards-based lesson or units of study in one of the four arts disciplines.
  • Participating teachers were asked to do a pre-assessment of arts learning related to the lesson or unit of the study, pilot the lesson or unit in their classroom, document the pilot process in print and video, evaluate the results, document the evidence of learning, and present the project at the May 2010 Statewide Colloquium.
  • Teachers were each assigned a non-public page in our Web environment to document work, post specific curriculum and instructional goals, and to reflect on their work as they were implementing the project.
  • During the time that teachers were contributing to their pages, researchers and others provided feedback to the teachers as they were implementing new methods and reinforcing practices they had used in the classroom prior to this project.
  • The lessons/units developed in each of the arts disciplines, dance, music, theatre, and visual arts considered the CCSESA Design Principles and Arts Assessment and the CCSESA Guiding Principles for Arts Education.
  • Teachers worked in cohorts per region in ongoing professional learning communities focused on arts learning and assessment.
